The Hong Kong Letterbox project titled "Believe in Believe" explores the complexities of human nature and trust through the lens of a seemingly mundane object - the letterbox. In Hong Kong, the letterbox is often painted in various colors, but it is rarely seen in a transparent form. This project seeks to question why transparency is not commonly used for letterboxes, considering its potential benefits in terms of safety and visibility.
Through informal interviews with locals, the project has uncovered a sense of mistrust in human behavior and communication. Despite this, 信[seon3]箱[soeng1] mean letterbox, 相[soeng1]信[seon3] mean believe in Cantonese romanization. The letterbox itself bears the word "believe" in its Chinese characters, highlighting the irony of the situation. The Chinese character for "letter" and "believe" is the same, showcasing the polysemous nature of the language.
The artist has received 21 letters from friends around the world, and each one will be placed in a unique, custom-designed letterbox, following the shape and size of the letter itself. By creating transparent letterboxes, the project aims to challenge the notion of privacy and vulnerability, inviting viewers to consider the power dynamics involved in communication and trust. Through this project, the artist hopes to inspire a rethinking of the role of the letterbox and promote a deeper reflection on the human experience.Despite this, the letterbox itself bears the word "believe" in its Chinese characters, highlighting the irony of the situation.
