Bert Simons: Three-Dimensional Paper Portraits

Writer: Kavieng chengKavieng cheng

Bert Simons creates three-dimensional human paper sculptures using 3D modeling techniques.

The first step involves building a 3D model. Bert places numerous capture points on the face of a model and imports the collected data into the open-source 3D software Blender. The 3D model is then dissected and input into two-dimensional planes made of paper or other materials.

Finally, all the pieces are assembled together to form a three-dimensional paper portrait.

Bert Simons, the Dutch artist, possesses a distinctive style that is both remarkably lifelike and hauntingly powerful in its line contours. Simons cleverly sculpts paper to create paper portraits. He sets up the headshot using computerized 3D techniques and then prints it out digitally. Subsequently, he meticulously adheres the individual paper pieces together.

Simons' work reflects the advancements in technology over the past decade and explores the intersection of digital art, video games, digital cinema, and other technological realms.
