Every Decisions

Writer: Kavieng chengKavieng cheng

There is a lot of decisions and direction in this project. I would like to write it down and record on the page. Some of the findings may have been made by mistake, but each decision has changed my work since then.

I have too many ideas; I love to make Printing work. As printing work is always one of the outcomes of my projects, I want to do printing again as one of my personal Features. I found that I have a considerable interest in doing 3D work too. Although I with not tried to do sculptures work before, This will be a big challenge for me. So I am going to try on some 3D work too. I want to do sculptures work. So I think of how can I do sculptures work.

Why use my own photos as the visual?

I think that the egg and I have an unfathomable relationship as if the egg and I are a common entity. I am made up of the sperm and egg of my parents, as are all eggs. It takes 24 days to complete the process from egg to chick, and I am 24 now; how an interesting coincidence!

I discuss doing 3D work sculptures egg on wood because I think Uv print is not available on printing on a real egg. So I try to print in wood. After A few days of printing in the workshop, I found that I could print in the actual egg. So I also try to print on the real egg with UV print. It is successful. However, I think I have a good choice for publishing them in wood because during the photoshoot for the work, To hold the eggs in place, the stickers on the lower side are used to uproot the shells of the eggs.

I tried different printing methods, including Uv print, polaroid transfer, Inkjet printing. I tried them all because I am curious about UV printing, Polaroid transfers and Inkjet printing. After trying it, I found the following examples of problems and findings.

Inkjet printing doesn't do an excellent job of mapping the image, it's only about half mapped, and the picture is unclear. However, inkjet printing has its advantages. Inkjet printing is an unstable method that feels like a mistake, but I find it exciting and distinctive.

The advantage of polaroid transfer is that there is a membrane in the polaroid, which is like a membrane in an eggshell, but because the stability of polaroid transfer is shallow, this low stability is a waste of money and a waste of time. So I have tried other methods.

I found out from a CSM fashion print graduate that there was a technique called UV print in the school, and I found out at first that I had the misconception that this technique was printed using temperature, so I thought that raw eggs would burn in the UV print, and I made wooden eggs.

That's is why I choose UV print and wooden egg as last.

I also tried different ways to make the wood egg; considerations include the egg's size, the colour of the egg, and the glossiness of the egg.

I also tried different way for how to making the wood egg, Considerations include the size of the egg, the colour of the egg and the glossiness of the egg.

1. size of the egg I have tried to make two different sizes, 32mm x 54mm and 34mm x 56mm, which seem to make very little difference, but in supermarkets they have been divided into medium and large eggs. In the end, I chose the larger egg (34mm x 56mm), as the larger egg allows for a larger image to be seen more clearly.

2. colour of the egg

I made it in two different colours, white and orange. I thought both colours were good, but I thought orange was better because the world knows for sure that eggs are orange. Some people maybe think that only duck eggs are white. However, this is not the main reason for choosing orange eggs, the main reason is after the UV print was finished, I found that the black colour on the white eggs had changed to a blue colour for unknown reasons. So I choose orange as the colour of my work.

3. glossiness of the egg

The sheen of the egg is difficult to imitate, as its colour has a slight matt tone. At last, I used spray paint for the colouring.

Eggshell book

I want to do the eggshell book in the very last two week before the submission. The workshop are fully booked. I ask Kelvin(from the uv print workshop) to let me print Uv Print. He booked me in a day before the submission. I feel that it is very helpful for book me in. and let me can finish the book before the submission day.

There are two very big difficult point while I working in this book, included the paper is not big enough and the paper is too soft, which is the problem I cannot solve in this moment. So I decided to try the way of the print.

After I finished to do the book binding and review everything, I found that I haven't write a copywriting and give my artwork a name. After much deliberation, I wanted my artworks - the eggshell book and the 12 eggs - to each have a Chinese and English name, and I came up with many names, including:

  1. Egg-pectation 觀蛋(watching the egg)

  2. Reality behind membrane 薄膜背後的現實

  3. egg-pilogue 觀蛋記(a repost of watching egg)

  4. egg in a shell 帶殼的雞蛋

I like the meaning in Chinese of the 觀蛋(watching the egg)"Kwun Egg" (cantonese pronunciation), as I concluded by looking at eggs. However, the English name "Kwun Egg"(cantonese pronunciation) was too unattractive, so I gave up on it.

I choose the "egg-pilogue 觀蛋記" as the 12 eggs artwork name because the artwork a bit look like a Scientific Reports of how the egg will be after 24 years later. I choose the word epilogue to retrofit with the word egg.

I also choose the "egg in a shell 帶殼的雞蛋", as the eggshell book artwork name because the in the print, the print is inside the eggshell, Its like the egg, at the same time, the shell mean both me and parents which is correspondence to the copyrighting I write.

I speeded most of my time in the copy writing. I wish to explain more about he copy writing in here, too let you understanding more of my feeling of this project and the art work.

"The egg-pilogue" The calcium carbonate stored in eggshells is broken down and reabsorbed into the bone. (The principle of turning an egg into a chicken) The protective covering changes during incubation: from sturdy to brittle right before the chick gains strength to break free from the shell. There is a feeling of ashes and despair, just like the eggshell of paper is broken, and every piece of paper will have traces of eggshell. The traces of the chick are bones, because The calcium carbonate Reabsorbed into the bone. And the bone is what supports the chicken, the human body, it is innate, it is given by parents and cannot be lost. The shell later onmg takes on an invisible form. (It's not just a shell, it's actually a protective shell, invisible but always there) It could be you, Home to your flesh and blood. This protective shell could be yourself, because bones are always in your body. This is also the self-protection mechanism of the representative. It could be him,This protective shell could be him, your father. It could be her, This protective shell could be her, your mother It could be the first ever support gifted by them,This may be the first support they have given you, as your body was gifted by your parents. Holding you up from cradle to grave. They will also take you by the hand and carry you from the cradle to the grave, with infinite support from the small to the metropolis. And so the cycle repeats. The hen breeds eggs, the eggs become chicks, the chicks become hens, and the hens lay eggs, it's a cycle.

Perhaps one day you would take on the form- Protecting something so fragile and delicate, Yet so close to your heart. (One day you will be that hen and breed eggs. Protecting such a fragile chick, you will become the protective shell that once protected yourself and the person you cherish.

I think this text is beautiful and elegant, and it is a text that I have enjoyed both in Chinese and English since I finished writing it.

It is not too difficult to understand, it is a bit abstract, but if you read it carefully, you will understand the meaning of the text. And the text explains the work in a way that makes it more readable and makes the viewer think more.
