"Thirty Chapters of Flowing Water 流水三十章"

The one that sticks in my mind is Zhang Daling's mother in "Thirty Chapters of Flowing Water 流水三十章"（as it does not have an English translated vision, I just translated the name by myself.)

Zhang Daling's mother was spoiled by her parents when she was a girl, a pampered woman who was used to a life of carefree food and clothing. However, after marriage, her husband accommodated and spoiled her. Taking her pleasure as his own and her comfort as his happiness.

The couple kept having children, but although Zhang Daling's mother could give birth, she did not know how to raise them and was not a woman who could bear hardship and take good care of her children.

The text describes Zhang Daling's mother thus.

"A woman who enjoys the pampering of her parents and men in such a way is often incapable of pampering her children. She seems to be a wife and mother for life, but a daughter forever. She is too preoccupied with pampering to learn to love others and children with energy and intelligence.

Each birth was torture for her, and she was too busy to pay attention to the motherhood that was being nurtured inside her and the baby. It is neglected, never noticed or nurtured, and is left to its own devices." (from "Flowing Water, Chapter 30", P54)

Because Zhang Daling's mother could not raise so many children, she was given a nanny to nurse in the countryside until she was eight years old. Separated from her mother since she was a baby, she failed to form an intimate attachment and returned home to her mother's hidden weakness - she was an unmotherly woman.

When Zhang Daling returned to her parents' home in Shanghai, there was a deep divide between her and her parents and a strained relationship with her mother, making her an introverted, stubborn, uncaring and relatively indifferent person concerning the world and others.
