  1. What fine art is ?

What is art? An interesting question that can be answered differently by different people based on different backgrounds or perceptions. When anything can be said to be art, what is the reason for that? Seeing interesting exhibits on the street or in the mall from time to time, but not sure if it is a work of art? Why can any medium be incorporated into art? Why can art be divided into broad and narrow senses, and what are their differences? What is the position of pure art under this artistic framework? Since everyone has different standards and definitions of art.

art in history

In 1746, the French philosopher Charles Batteux published a theoretical book with great influence on the understanding of art in the future - Les beaux art reduits a un memeprincipe, beaux-arts, the fine arts officially defined as pure ornamental art, and practical art. The nature of the craft separates. When Denis Diderot, 1713-1784) compiled the French Encyclopedia in 1751, he grouped poetry, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and music under the category of pure art. Gottlieb Baumgarten proposed in 1750 that aesthetics should be independent from rational philosophy emphasizing logical concepts. As a discipline aimed at perceptual cognition, Immanuel Kant believed in Critique of Judgment that pure aesthetics should be separated from practical purposes such as moral and utilitarian considerations. . This kind of requirement for the purity of art and aesthetics, and aesthetics as an independent school, arose in the 18th century. It is in line with the Enlightenment movement. It is the emphasis on the freedom of the subject and the embodiment of the independent value.

art in a broad sense

Art in a broad sense can include all creative industries, folk crafts, or all events with creative elements, etc., into art that is recognized by the public, so art in a broad sense can include any kind of media or some events, basically All can be referred to as art. In the narrow sense of art, the art referred to is limited to pure art. The idea or direction is derived from pure art, and there is already a certain theory and background to explain what art is, or what constitutes art. What are the elements, works that conform to certain elements are works of art in the narrow sense.

Using the examples of painting and ceramics mentioned in the previous paragraph, and analyzing it again in the broad and narrow sense of art, a clearer picture should be drawn. The first thing to analyze is its nature, painting and ceramics in a broad sense, and their own media Already a commonly used medium in art, regardless of the motive, content, concept or reason for painting or making, it is considered art in today's terms. In the narrow sense of art, there are more restrictions than in the broad sense. When viewing exhibitions or works, there will always be a set of theories that are put on the exhibition or works. This theory can vary from person to person, because of background or education. different from one to another.

Due to this background or premise, when viewing exhibitions or works, the author will tend to analyse it from a narrow perspective. This idea comes entirely from pure art education during the university period. This kind of thinking mode is deeply ingrained in my mind, and every time This kind of narrow-minded thinking will naturally flow to this kind of thinking at the beginning of the analysis, and it is not a difficult thing to use this kind of thinking, just as a child who has formally learned to draw and sketch will never be able to draw that future. Learned drawing state.

Taking this example as an example, should art in a broad sense appear first, or art in a narrow sense? In the author's understanding, art in the narrow sense must appear first. No one has come to understand art, so how to distinguish the broad sense from the narrow sense? The narrow sense is determined by those who understand, and then there will be a broad sense. Before the narrow sense, art was still just called art.

Orientation or decision-making rests with the audience

Therefore, when reading art, the key to the broad and narrow senses is the influence of the readers themselves on art education or cognition, but please do not misunderstand, the level of education does not determine the watershed of the broad or narrow sense, but only determines the The audience has no choice in this one. Audiences who can understand the definition of art in the narrow sense can choose other viewing angles and different viewpoints to think about. For the supporters of the art in the narrow sense, they will be more tired when viewing works, because they will think from different angles or theories unexpectedly. works, but the advantage is the ability to roam in two opposing modes of thinking. Of course, whether it is art in a broad sense or art in a narrow sense, the final orientation or decision rests with the audience.
